- “Remembering the ’60s Now That We Are in Our 60s”
Friday, June 6
1:30–4:15 p.m.
Alumni Discussion Panel during the UnCommon Core
The ’60s were years of protest and experimentation at the University and in society. The Class of 1968 is convening a panel to look at that time, what it meant then and how we think about it now, with a focus on several significant events: the Students Against the Rank sit-in of 1966, Chicago’s open housing demonstrations (summer of 1966), the Special Vietnam Convocation of 1968, and other Vietnam War protests leading up to the Chicago Democratic Convention in the summer of 1968. Participants will include classmates: peace activist Dorothy Chin; David Vigoda and Dan Kocher (both actively involved in the protest movement); and conservative commentator Phil Giraldi. Whatever your feelings were then, they inevitably shaped who you are now. You will not want to miss this communal reflection.

After breakfast at Bartlett Dining Commons, we’ll march with our banner through the Quads to Rockefeller Chapel for the Alumni Convocation. Mildred Dresselhaus, PhD’59, a world-renowned scientist, will speak.

- Note to Female Classmates:
We came a long way, baby, to get where we are today, but, baby, where are you today?
The Reunion committee is planning a weekend of activities that will be cool, groovy, hip, and out of sight. However, something has been missing at our last two reunions—you! This letter is to encourage all of the female members of the Class of ‘68 to come to campus and participate. We hope to have a successful reunion, but we need some gender parity.
We know that University of Chicago women have a lot to say and a lot on their minds. Come join us to discuss Ayn Rand and which was the better band: Beatles or Stones? Remember the time when marching on the administration took precedence over everything? Remember those old pre-women’s liberation days when women had “hours” that could be used at only certain times to leave the dorm at night? Remember when pleated skirts were replaced by miniskirts, and garter belts by pantyhose, only to be replaced by a pair of jeans, a large sweatshirt, and boots?
Find your love beads, put them on, and walk down memory lane with us. Let’s get together and “rap” about those old days when you weren’t an adult until you were 21. Gaze into the cosmic “Lava Lamp” of memories past and become “blissed out” again. It’ll blow your mind.
Bring your spouses and significant others with you. The perfect Reunion is a Reunion in which everyone participates. Let us have that perfect Reunion, and let us see you again.
So what are you waiting for? Be here now! Way to go!
If you need any more information about the Reunion, please feel free to call me at 510/652-5696 or e-mail me at marlenehellman@yahoo.com.
We are looking forward to seeing you all in June 2008!
Sincerely,
Marlene Hevia Hellman
Reunion Committee Member
Encourage participation:
- Get in touch with friends, and make sure they’re coming back as well. If you’ve lost contact with someone, check out the online directory and send e-cards to boost attendance.
Stay connected:
- Send in your news to our class correspondent. Watch the class column for updates on reunion throughout the year.
- The University doesn’t have contact information for a few of our classmates, and we need your help to find them. We want to make sure everyone knows about the reunion.
